2023 Edition

In the 2023 United States International Poster Biennial, 7,380 international posters were submitted from 75 countries, resulting in 260 juried posters in social, cultural, animated, student, and specialty categories. Exhibitions were held at various locations in the United States including Iowa State University, Suffolk University, the University of Arkansas, Purdue University, as well as public spaces in Long Beach, California.

Awards Jury

  • Agnieszka Ziemiszewska, from Poland, is a graphic designer, educator and art curator. She designs posters, publications, visual identifications as well as social art projects. She regards art not only as a communication and intervention tool but also as an area of unlimited experimentation. Selflessness and freedom, seen as a state in which one does not assume or exclude anything, are the values she considers to be essential in art.

    Agnieszka first built her career working as an independent designer creating visual identification systems. Currently, she focuses on experimental, non-commercial, educational and research projects. Her works have been presented all over the world (Poster Biennale in Warsaw, Mexico, Tehran, China, Italy, Ecuador, the Triennial of Poster in Toyama, Lahti, Trnava, Hong Kong, Mons, the International Poster Festival in Shenzhen, the Dubai Design Week, the Beijing International Design Week and the Ogaki Poster Museum in Japan). Her works were also shown at solo exhibitions in South Korea, Hungary, Indonesia and Poland. She has been awarded numerous distinctions and awards.

    Agnieszka is a professor at the Faculty of the New Media Arts at the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology in Warsaw where she used to lead the Typography Studio for several years and currently heads the MA Visual Communication Studio. She has lead workshops and lectures at international events and universities. In the past few years she has conducted projects in France, Germany, Bulgaria, China, Hungary, the Netherlands, UAE, Indonesia, South Korea, Jordan, Israel, Italy and Iran.

    Agnieszka has been part of juries and committees in national and international graphic design competitions and events. She has also curated and co-organized multiple exhibitions in Poland and abroad.

  • Saki Mafundikwa is the recipient of the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award (also known as the President’s Award) from the Design and Art Direction (D&AD), the UK’s premier design and advertising organization. He is the founder and director of the Zimbabwe Institute of Vigital Arts (ZIVA) a design and new media training college in Harare. He has an MFA in Graphic Design from Yale University. His book, Afrikan Alphabets: the Story of Writing in Afrika was published in 2004. Besides being of historical importance, it is also the first book on Afrikan typography. It is currently out of print.

    His award-winning first film, Shungu: The Resilience of a People had its world premiere at 2009’s International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). He was a speaker at TED2013, he keynoted the first Pan African Design Institute (PADI) conference in Ghana in 2019 and he spoke at TED/PMI in Tanzania in 2019. He has also run workshops for design students in Europe, North, South and Central America, and Afrika.

    He has been published widely on design and cultural issues and is currently working on a revised edition of Afrikan Alphabets which he hopes will be published in 2023. He lives, works and farms in Harare, Zimbabwe.

  • Born in Denmark in 1975. Graphic Designer and Educator. Works and teaches in a field in the intersection between language, culture and space. For several years she has been working with product development, branding and consulting for companies and organisations. Currently she teaches a variety of design courses at different design schools and universities in Denmark and abroad. She works on and researches design development projects and has her own design studio doing print and digital design. She is an owner of a letterpress workshop. Vice Chairman at The Danish Book Craft Society. Appointed External Examiner at The higher artistic educational programmes by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science. Served as a juror at several international Poster Biennals and Design competiotions woldwide. COFOD excelence Award winner. Graphis Platinum, Gold and Silver Award winner. China International Poster Biennal Silver winner. She has been exhibiting, giving lectures and workshops internationally in Europe, Middle East, Asia and America.

  • Xiao Yong is serving his second consecutive term on the Board of Cumulus. He has been dedicated to the association for many years, having first been elected to the Cumulus Executive Board for the 2007-2010 cycle. During his current leadership turn on the Board of Cumulus, Xiao’s focus has been to support the Board and the Secretariat in helping grow new program opportunities for students via Cumulus, a key objective of the association’s current strategic plan. As part of his board service, Xiao has also continued to amplify the visibility of Cumulus in China helping to recruit other national universities as members and identifying prospective partnerships with like-minded design organizations and outlets.

    As a Professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), Beijing, Xiao is a dedicated teacher who routinely lectures internationally; he has taught in more than 400 universities in China and around the world including teaching engagements in Germany, France, Denmark, Mexico, Malaysia, and Thailand. Xiao is also an active conference speaker, conference organizer, juror, and leader in the communication design field. He has served as the chief editor of Art and Design Magazine (2001-2003) and has designed and edited more than thirty communication design publications.

    As a practitioner, Xiao is an award-winning graphic designer and the recipient of the 2007 Top 10 Chinese Designers; his visual design work is in the collection of several museums. Xiao was the chief designer of the 2008 Medals for the Beijing Summer Olympic Games. His brand identity work includes communication systems and logos for exhibitions, conferences and organizations, including well-known logos for Pure Finland, Chinese Artists Union, the stamp design for “From Beijing to London,” jointly issued by the China/UK post, and the original logo for the Cumulus Green competition.

    Xiao’s service to the field also includes a Vice Presidency in the Board of ICO-D (formerly Icograda) from 2009 through 2011.

    Xiao holds an M.A from the University of Art and Design Helsinki (TaiK), now Aalto University.

  • Angelina Lippert is the Chief Curator and Director of Content of Poster House in New York City, the first museum in the United States dedicated to the art and history of the poster. She holds an MA in the art of the Russian Avant-Garde from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, and a BA in theology and art history from Smith College. She is the author of The Art Deco Poster and co-author of the upcoming Wonder City of the World: New York City Travel Posters, and has lectured at SVA, The Cooper Union, NYU, Pratt, The New York Times, the American Center Moscow, Columbia University, and The Sotheby's Institute of Art. She was a recipient of the Emily Hall Tremaine Journalism Fellowship for Curator through Hyperallergic, and has written for The Muse by the Clio Awards as well as the New York Journal of Books.

  • Joe Scorsone and Alice Drueding have been partners in design for over thirty years. Their work has been included in many international publications and exhibitions, has received numerous awards, and is in permanent collections around the world. Joe holds a BFA in Graphic Design from University at Buffalo and an MFA from University of Illinois. Alice holds degrees in Art History from Brown University (BA) and Graphic Design (BFA) from Tyler School of Art. Joe and Alice each were awarded the title Professor Emeritus in the Graphic & Interactive Design program at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University, where they headed the graduate and undergraduate programs, respectively.

    Organizations from which they have received awards include The International Biennial of the Poster in Mexico, The Biennial of the Poster in Bolivia, The Lahti Poster Biennial in Finland, and the Colorado International Invitational Poster Exhibition, where they also were the honor laureates and judges. Their work has been featured in publications such as Graphis, TDC: The Annual of The Type Director’s Club of New York, Metropolis, How Magazine, Novum: World of Graphic Design and The Design of Dissent by Milton Glaser and Mirko Ilić.

  • Felipe Taborda is a graphic designer, author and curator from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A graduate of Rio’s Catholic University, he studied cinema and photography at the London International Film School (England), Communication Arts at the New York Institute of Technology and Graphic Design at the School of Visual Arts (USA). He has had his own office since 1990, working mainly in the cultural, publishing and recording areas. In 2008 he launched his book Latin American Graphic Design, published by Taschen (Germany). In 2014 the St John’s University (New York) has organized the exhibition Another Point of View, covering 30 years of his graphic works. He has curated the event Footb-All Mix / 32 Posters for a Passionate Game for the 2018 Russia World Cup. In 2018 he had two simultaneous retrospective exhibitions: Todo al Revés / The Graphic Work of Felipe Taborda, during Madrid Gráfica (Spain); and Cara a Tapa / The Visual Music of Felipe Taborda, at the International Poster Biennial (Mexico). During six months, between 2019 and 2020, he was in Europe at the invitation of universities and institutions, first in Barcelona (Spain) and later in London (England). In 2022 the Gallo Gallery, Catholic University of Chile, presented the retrospective exhibition Design is the Message / The Graphic Art of Felipe Taborda. During more than 40 years he was correspondent of the magazines Novum (Germany) and Print (USA). He is now international correspondent of Experimenta (Spain) and Grafikmagazin (Germany).

  • In 1978 Woody established his first office, Pirtle Design, in Dallas, Texas.

    In 1988 he became an equity partner of Pentagram, and for 18 years, Woody helped mold the New York office into the powerhouse it is today. In 2005, he retired from Pentagram and re-established Pirtle Design. Woody’s clients have included The American Folk Art Museum, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, The Dallas Museum of Art, Brooklyn Ballet, The Rockefeller Foundation, Brown-Forman Wine and Spirits, Bacardi Global Brands, Princeton University, Brooklyn Law School, IBM, Fuji Television Network, Amnesty International, and many others. His work has been exhibited worldwide and is in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, the Museum of Modern Art and Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Neue Sammlung Museum in Munich, and the Zurich Poster Museum, among others. He has taught at numerous art schools, lectured extensively, is a member of Alliance Graphique

    Internationale, and in October of 2003, was awarded the prestigious AIGA Medal for his career contribution to the design profession. In 2015 he was awarded the distinguished Rome Prize in Design from the American Academy in Rome. In 2016, he became a Fellow of the Academy.
